Summer Wrap Up with Leighton
August 27, 2009
Q:  How has the summer gone in your opinion for GRFC?

A:  As a club we had tremendous success both on and off the field.  The list of tournament successes could go on and on.  Starting with the newly formed Girls 94 and 96 Red teams winning tournaments to the Boys 98 White making the final at the Federal Way Blast Off. The accomplishments at Bigfoot, from so many teams, were outstanding. The out of state tournaments saw the Boys 94 Blue going to the Eastside tournament in Oregon and winning and the Girls 94 Blue representing GRFC in the Slammers tournament in Southern Cal with the Girls 97 Blue making the quarter final of the Mustang tournament in Pleasanton, California!

So many accomplishments on the field and off the field we were just as good. Bigfoot saw another large turnout of GRFC families and friends and don’t forget the Girls 95 Red climbing Mt. Si!  Also, so many kids played on other GRFC teams to help with teams in need of players for various reasons.  It was really the best summer for club involvement since we formed three years ago and I was excited to see so many people helping each other when in need.

Q:  With PDL league and state leagues approaching what are your thoughts?

A:  I think all of our teams are prepared and parents, coaches, and kids are excited about the challenge ahead.  I believe everyone has been put in a like-kind group in terms of competition within in their league.  If players, coaches, or parents think they are unjustly put in the wrong group they have the league season on the field to prove everyone wrong!!  It’s a fun time of year to follow the other teams within our club on the PDL website and the State league websites to see how they are competing against the rest of the state.  Once Schedules are available, look for the links to each league here and on the home page.

Q:  What is the Seattle Sounders Regional Training Program all about?

A:  Here is the link to the official release from Darren Sawatzky the Youth Director of the Sounders. http://www.soundersfc.com/Youth/Youth-Teams.aspx

This sounds like a great opportunity for those involved and a great motivator for those not chosen last time around.  Our regional training center will be at Starfire on Monday nights starting in mid September.  The clubs in our Regional Center are HPFC, ECFC, Dos, EFC, and GRFC.

Q:  Are you excited about the October 9th GRFC Golf, Dinner and Auction fundraiser?

A:  This has to be my favorite event that GRFC does.  And this year I expect it to be better than ever before.  Great food, prizes at the golf event, auction items, and of course the people of GRFC put the icing on the cake.  It will be very well organized and a ton of fun. Please join if you haven’t been to one yet.   And if you have I hope to see you there again!

Q:  Can you give us a glimpse of what you see in the upcoming few months?

A:  Within GRFC we have, of course, the Fall Leagues with academies/camps. Extra training, for the kids willing, within our club to get better as soccer players, are being offered again till the end of 2009.  We then have, of course, our 2nd annual GRFC Winter Classic on Martin Luther King weekend in January and we’re expecting an even better tournament than the successful one we had in the first year.

That brings us into February with PDL Fall leagues and the State Cup.  Exciting times to come.  Also we will be announcing shortly an exciting new partnership for GRFC in the year 2010!!!!!  Stay tuned.......
